本研究以參與觀察和訪談為資料收集方法，針對英國約克夏郡的某一所小學兒童研究其性別認同，以及男女學童在行為上的差異。經資料分析後，主要可歸納出三個性別認同的主題，分別是:性別隔離，兒童的男性化行為和女性化行為，以及男性化態度與女性化態度。學校操場與教室中均可發現兒童的性別隔離，尤其是對團體有強烈認同感的兒童更是免與異性相處;其次，男孩特別喜歡表現其堅韌性與勇敢，一般認為是男性化的特質;而女孩碰到一些傳統上認定的男性學科，例如:工藝課，則表現怯懦;第三，透過傳統的性別角色分工，男孩的男性化特質被加強，例如:男人做粗活兒，女人煮飯，做家事，照顧小孩。但是，本研究發現:在學校中，女孩除了表現其女性特質之外，也有女性主義意識的覺醒，亦即意識到不平等。性別認同差異可從家庭勞動的性別分工，學校課程，教師，以及性別刻板印象幾方面解釋。
