Focusing on the news reports of a rape case concerning a university professor and his female student, this paper uses discourse analysis and ideological critique to explore in what ways the media's reports reinforce the unequal power relationship between the male professor and the female student. This paper includes three areas of inquiries: (1) news sources; (2) modes of operation of ideology in news stories; (3) comparisons of how issues related to rape and sexual interaction are represented in news reports and in social commentaries on the event. In news reports, preventing and resisting rape is considered entirely as women's responsibility, thus reinforcing the gender asymmetry of the distribution of behavioral restinctions between men and women.
