There are two considerations to design the width of sidewalks in this paper. One is to apply pedestrian volume and level of service to decide the width of sidewalks. The relationship between pedestrian volume and the width of sidewalks can be clarified by the traffic flow theory. The phase of Erlang distribution obtained by pedestrian arrival distribution can represent level of service. The other is use "pedestrian occupancy space" to calculate the minimum width of sidewalks verified by the VTR experiment. Finally, the larger should be the designing width of sidewalks.
