The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of life of patients with permanent colostomy and the relationship between their quality of life and the colostomy. This study was conducted from March 1, 1994 to June 15, 1994. 88 patients with permanent colostomy were selected by random sample. Thirty-six completed questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS/PC. The results indicate that the quality of life of patients with permanent colostomy was above average. The general feeling score was 5.205, the subjective satisfaction score was 77.778, the objective satisfaction score was 8.028, and the general life satisfaction score was 5.500. Each of these was correlated with physical symptoms. In the low r range was social interaction frequency (2.344), and in the middle range was the social interaction satisfaction score (1.544). 54% of subjects pointed out that the colostomy affected their life, and 94% of subjects felt satisfaction with medical care givers. 82% of patients complained that sexual frequency was decreased. All three factors are related to general satisfaction with life. But age, sex, education level, and marital status were found to be non-significant factors in regard to general satisfaction of life. The results of open questionnaires showed that the good quality of life consisted of achievement by children, harmonious family life, good health, independent self-care, and the enjoyment of delicious food. Also it was hoped that the medical caregiver could tell the truth, provide relatives with nursing care knowledge and techniques, as well as prove a channel for medical consultation.
