The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effects of orthopedic nursing continuing education program on nurses orthopedic nursing knowledge, and to investigate the level of nursing competence of continuing education program. Survey research design was conducted. Twenty-seven nurses were complete participated this program in a medical center. Instruments included an orthopedic nursing knowledge test and CE help questionnaire. The knowledge test was use to measure nurses knowledge of orthopedic nursing and administer prior to the class, immediately following the class and one month after program. The CE help questionnaire was use to investigate the efficacy of program on changing nurses orthopedic-related knowledge and skill. The results showed: (1) the knowledge of orthopedic nursing increases in immediately following the class and one month after program; (2) the knowledge of cast & traction care, and external fixator & pin care were significantly increased; (3) external fixator & pin care, and introduction of CPM & cryotherapy had more positive efficacy of nurses knowledge and skills. Through this study, the nurse administrator more comprehensively understands the effects of continuing education program. Furthermore, the result of this study will provide nurse administrator to plan adequately program to fit nurses needs in clinical setting.
