The paper will discuss the major aspects of electronic journals. This new form of
communication bears many serious implications for the publishing industry, the academic
community, and the popular press. What are electronic journals, what are their capabilities, how can
they be searched, is there standardization? These are all issues which must be confronted as
electronic journals gain popularity, especially through the explosive growth of the World Wide Web.
Cost issues are looked at, in addition to the many philosophical issues related to electronic journals
are discussed. The article includes pricing tables for the Johns Hopkins' Project Muse as well as
includes a listing from the Web sit E-doc of the available electronic journals as of March 1996.
