The nursing care delivery system is closely related to professional nu rsing development and social changes. In the hospital, head nurses perceived these phenomenon by daily experiences and reflected the mto their nursing care delivery system. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the current nuring care delivery system. In the present study, the Delphi technique was used and 136 head nurses were invited as nursing experts. Research instruments included open-ended questions in the first round, itemized closed-ended questonnaries in the second and the third rounds. Sixty-nine head nurses (50.74%) had finished all three rounds. From the collected information, it can be concluded that mix nursing (primary combined with team nursing), primary nursing and team nursing were the top three popularly adopted delivery systems in that order. The mixed nursing delivery system integrated the principle of primary nursing into the method of team nursing to let the senior staff have the responsibilty to mentor the new staff nurses. No matter what nursing care delivery system was adopted, the nursing shortage and difference of nursing competence were described as the predominant problems. Based on the above study results, three suggestions were made:(1)Teaching and communication skills must be taught to the senior staff to help them cope with the montor reponsibility.(2) To be able to understand the inner problem of the nursing shortage, both the hospital and nursing administrators should evaluate the hospital work flow, transportation system, and multiple discipline care system.(3) In order to rank nursing staff compatability with their nursing competence, clinical ladders may be remodeled.
