From the beginning the Internet has been built on simple, easy to
extend technologies. Internet technologies rarely performed in the laboratories
as well as more complex technologies, Yet, these same Internet technologies have
prevailed in the real world are will likely continue to lead for the immediate
future. This paper (and associated talk and Web pages) will examine several
examples of Internet technologies and their competitors and attempt to show what
traits a successful technology should have to thrive in the Internet world.
