追隨著他父親的足跡，沈寶環博士獻身圖書館事業，而成為近代中國另一位誠摯
篤實的圖書館人和圖書館教育工作者。 沈博士的父親，沈祖榮先生（ 1883-1976 ）是中國
第一位獲得美國圖書館學位的留學生。返國後，畢身致力圖書館教育，因而贏得「中國圖書
館學教育之父」之譽。 沈寶環博士在美國丹佛大學獲得圖書館學碩士和教育博士後， 於
1955 年返回臺灣，迄 1995 年榮退為止， 四十年如一日，為開拓臺灣圖書館事業及圖書館
教育不遺餘力，豐功偉績，堪與美國 Melvil Dewey 媲美。本文只是一篇有關沈寶環教授生
平傑出成就的簡單介紹。
Following the footstep of his famous father, Dr. Harris B. H. Seng has
become another loyal and fiercely devoted professional librarian and library
educator in modern China. His father, Mr. Samuel T. Y. Seng (1883-1976) was the
first Chinese student ever earned a library science degree from New York Public
Library School. Upon his return to China, he devoted his entire life to promote
and advance library education in China. Mr. Seng was widely recognized as the
Founding Father of Chinese Library Education. D. Harris B. H. Seng, on the other
hand, earned both his Master's degree in library science and a
