本文就蘇轍年輕時，應制舉所作論文探討分析，以見蘇轍早期學問之根抵。蘇轍《應詔集》共十二卷,所談包括史論、君術論、臣事論、民政論、邊政論、人物論、五經論、道德論。史論歷指夏至五代之得失，極見慧見。君術論、臣事論、民政論、邊政論是就時弊而言。人物論屬於歷史,五經論、道德論屬於學術。在文中分別列舉要項說明，由此可見蘇轍之才慧與思辨之能力。
