In 1990, I published a book on the collation of the Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures. In this book, I presented over 400 text restorations for Bao Huanzhi's Southern Song Dynasty edition and the Ming Dynasty edition in the Yongle Da Dian, both of which had been previously revised by Dai Zhen. In 1993, Li Jimin also published a collated edition of the Nine Chapters. While he did make some accurate corrections, he also followed some of the collation errors made by Dai Zhen. Furtherore, Li Jimin also made some errors in his own collation. In the present article, I discuss the following reasons for the mistakes made by Li Jimin: 1.He was unfamiliar with some of the rhetorical patterns used in classical Chinese. 2.He misunderstood some of the mathematical principles used in the Nine Chapters. 3.He lacked clear understanding of the structure of Liu Hui's annotations to the Nine Chapters. 4.He was insufficiently familiar with some historical relics. In this article, I also emphasize that the most important principle in collation of the Nine Chapters is not to revise or republish original text that is correct.
