Librarians are well aware that of the alarming rise in the cost of scientific periodicals, especially health science journals. Yet acquisition budgets have not grown correspondingly. In fact they have decreased as a percentage of total university research expenditures. Consequently, providing the information that readers require has become a growing challenge for all medical libraries in Taiwan. This article introduces the Medical Library Periodicals Union Catalog and Interlibrary Loan System built through the cooperation of 16 medical libraries in Taiwan, stating its objectives, functions, standards and pertinent standard applications. The difficultics encountered during the research and development process for this system are also described. The author then discusses the post-installation maintenance of the system, its future development and various applications in hopes of sharing the R&D ideals and developmental goals of the system with the library community in Taiwan.
