Technological advancements can combine computer and interactive, multimedia environments to create lifelong learning opportunities within reach of everyone in the world. Arguing that the emergence of technology-delivered learning represents one of the most significant opportunities in the learning society, this paper provides information and analysis of this development. The goal of lifelong learning demands learner-centered systems that encourage inquiring minds and creativity and provide choice and flexibility in the what, when, and how of learning. Learning technologies, particularly the new two-way communications and information technologies, can enable learners to become self-directed and active learners, creators of ideas and knowledge, and collaborators in learning. Thus, they are radically changing the environment for lifelong learning. This paper describes and analyzes computer network learning technologies that are challenging the future preeminence of the lifelong learning society.
