The problems of collection deterioration in libraries is very serious. A large proportion of books and documents in libraries become brittle due to paper deterioration. The major cause of book deterioration is acidic compounds generated . during the modern papermaking process. Library of Congress of the United States began to conduct a project of mass deacidification for collection adopting the Diethyl zinc (DEZ) system in mid-1970's. There are also another countries, including France, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, etc. to do their best in studying the significant strategies for acidic collections during the past thirty years. Fortunately, there were a lot of research results in mass deacidification technology. And these useful research results stimulate the conservator's served in libraries and archives. The author intended to describe the state-of-the-art of the acidic paper, mass deacidification technology and significant strategies for collection deterioration. The paper can be divided into even parts, namely, (l)foreword; (2)the problems of the paper deterioration; (3)the status of the library collection deterioration in various countries; (4)the efforts of library materials conservation and preservation; (5)study on the mass deacidification technology for general publications in libraries and its application in reality; (6)providing a business-level of mass deacidification for general library collections; and (7)konc1usions. The author deeply hoped that the precious human-beings' •printed materials could be preserved for the next generations after mass deacidification of collections.
