　　　　　霍桑的長篇小說《七角樓》（THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES 1851),與美國早期影像科技的成長，有密切的關係。達蓋爾板像片 (Daguerreotype) 在一八三九年底自法國傳入美國後，立刻風行社會各階層，產生獨特的影像文化，對攝影理論的萌芽與塑造有很深遠的作用。本文分為兩部份，前半部探討達蓋爾板影像在美國的發展、流行、與末落（約在一八五五年開始），分析它對美國社會、藝術、民主觀念、新聞傳播等所產生的影響。第二部份以《七角樓》的文本為主，分析霍桑在此科技發明不過十年，軟硬體尚未成熟的階段，就以影像為時代進步象徵，化解了兩個清教徒家族百年來的秘密與仇恨。故事以一位一八四零年代的攝影師為中心，對影像所牽涉到的各種問題，皆有觸及：如影像的本質，陽光的重要性，攝影師的社會地址，光線所產生的不同效果，例如虛╱實、明╱暗、真╱偽、表╱ 裡等。作者主旨在於詮釋物質文明快迅的進展，衝擊古老的觀念和不合時宜的作法。人不應該生活在祖先的陰影中，期待恩澤庇祐。新的時代已經來臨；惟有能夠順應時代步伐的人，才不會被新科技的潮流所淹沒。
