Hsu I Ping was well-known for his expertise in the area of physical education during the period of "gymnastics course" in schools at the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. Shanghai Chinese Gymnastics School that he led was an important location where gymnastics teachers were bred. The epoch-making thoughts on physical education that he had been communicating played an important role in the development of Chinese modem physical education. After Hsu's words had been analyzed, and generalized, the following conclusions were reached: 1.Hsu's thoughts on physical education stemmed from his concern about the survival of the nation and his fellow countrymed. He advocated militancy to strengthen the weak. Also he promoted physical education at school like the physical education's being emphasized at school during the Chon Dynasty. 2.There are two special features of Hsu's thoughts. One is that he stressed on people's health. The other is that he viewed the nature of physical education was not military gymnastics; they ought not to be confused. 3.Hsu's thoughts were put into action in two ways:to breed the physical education faculty members and to compile materials for teaching physical education. Thus the foundation of the implementation of school physical education was established.
