This case report was conducted by the field method approach. The writer was the primary nurse taking care of a male adolescent who was first diagnosed with leukemia during his hospitalization. Content analysis was applied to 10 process recordings to identify the boy's coping behaviors during his hospitalization. The boy's coping behaviors were categorized as (1)orienting behavior, e. g. information-seeking, expectation, and identification; (2)coping behavior, e.g. self- control, seeking support, receptivity, protest, isolation, bargaining, substitution, and emotional expression; (3)evaluating behavior, e.g. positive evaluation, and negative evaluation. The findings address the role and function of the nurse as care-giver during hospitalization and as consultant, listener, and educator, to help the child with cancer during his hospitalization.
