在18世紀初英格蘭蘇格蘭是否合并的辯論過程中,合并派和反對派的"筆墨大戰"對于公眾輿論有重要的導向作用。丹尼爾·笛福作為英格蘭政府的秘密間諜,于1706至1712年間數次被派往蘇格蘭,負責搜集情報,進行合并宣傳。笛福成功地完成了英格蘭政府的使命,他對合并事業的支持來自他對英格蘭的愛國熱情和對蘇格蘭命運的同情,同時也反映了新興資產階級迫切希望通過合并促進二國資本主義經濟發展的利益訴求。
The battle of words between pro-unionists and anti-unionists on whether England and Scotland should unit into one during the 1700 splayed an important role in steering the public opinions.Daniel Defoe,a secret agent of English government,was sent to Scotland for gathering intelligence and promoting the union advocacy from 1706 to 1712,and completed his mission successfully.Defoe’s steady support for the union was motivated by his patriotism and the sympathy for the sufferings of Scotland.At the same time,his support also reflected the keen interest demand of the emerging English bourgeoisie to promote the development of capitalist economy in both countries through union.
