David Lodge’s novel Thinks...deals with the nature of consciousness that gripped the western academia in the 1990 s.With a debate between "two cultures" in its background and through the love affair between a cognitive scientist and a writer in residence at the University of Gloucester and their different ways of looking at consciousness,Thinks...probes into the possibility of a dialogue between natural science and social science. This paper argues that flexible focalization, stream of consciousness and interior monologue play a crucial part in building the novel’s plot, theme and characters,by which Lodge contemplates key issues in literature, science, religion and ethics.
