According to the statistical data from the Cross-Border Education Research Team and the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, this paper analyzes the history and the strategy of the global expansion of the international branch campuses established by American higher education institutions, and reveals and explains that American universities have being showing the distinct interest tendency and expansion focus in different historical periods and regions. Based on the above analysis, it is obvious that the export of international branch campuses would inevitably carry the strategic intent and ideological output of U.S. However, the essential factors that prompt American universities to set up branch campuses abroad are global competition, economic interests and national security, which could provide reference for the import of foreign educational resources in China and the export of China’s higher education to the world.
