This paper explores the semantics of jiu( 就) and cai( 才) in terms of two-dimensional scalar constructions. Jiu could be used as a scalar adverb indicating the opposite scalar implicature of cai,or as a focus marker with a reversed pragmatic scale. This analysis is fully supported by their propositional and modal usages. We thus provide a unified account for these complex linguistic phenomena,and redefine the criterions and subcategories of scalar operators as well.
