The purpose of this study is to examine the related factors of
children''''''''s aggressive behavior and the effects of using
cognitive behavior strategies for guidance. There
were two stages of this study: the survey study and the
experiment. In order to understand the children''''''''s
aggressive behavior and its related factors, the author
randomly chose 1047 5th and 6th graders in four elementary
schools in the central Taiwan area as the subjects to
respond the survey questionnaire for the first
stage of this study. There are six related factor
catalogs, namely, self-concept, hostility attribution
bias, social skills, parents attitude, family environment, and
social-economical status. At the second stage of this study,
there were 24 highly aggressive children in two
elementary schools were screened from the survey for
the experiment. They were randomly assigned to the
experimental group and the control group. These
participants received 12 units of group guidance of cognitive
behavior strategies for two months. Post-test was held after the
experiment, a follow-up evaluation was given two weeks later.
The findings of this study were the followings :
I. The Survey Findings A. The relation between aggressive
behavior and personvariables.
a. There is a very significant difference between children''''''''s
aggressive behavior and his/ her self-concept, social skills,
family environment, social-economical status, and
parent''''''''s attitude. b. The result appeared a
very significant positive relevance between
children''''''''s aggressive behavior and hostility attribution bias.
c. When applying the stepwise multi regression to analyze the
predictability of the related variables toward the aggressive
behavior, it revealed the sequence entering the stepwise
regression as the following: social skills, self-
concept, social-economical status, and hostility
attribution bias. The total predictability is 37.85%.
B. The comparison between aggressive and nonaggressive children.
a. Personal factors: there was a significant difference between
aggressive and nonaggressive children in terms of self-concept,
social skills, and hostility attribution bias .
b. Family factors: in terms of social-economical status, family
environment, and parents attitude, the aggressive children
received significant lower score than nonaggressive
children. C. The difference between
aggressive behavior and hostility attribution
bias in terms of different background variables.
a. Boys received a higher score both in aggressive behavior and
hostility attribution bias than girls.
b. Parents educational background played no difference in
children''''''''s aggressive behavior and hostility attribution bias.
c. There was no difference between single-parent family children
and double-parent family children in terms of aggressive
behavior and hostility attribution bias.
d. There was a significant difference between different social
economical status children in terms of aggressive behavior and
hostility attribution bias.
e. There was a significant difference between different family
environment in terms of aggressive behavior and hostility
attribution bias.
f. There was a significant difference between different parents
attitude in terms of aggressive behavior and hostility
attribution bias.
The Experiment
A. After the experiment, there were a post test and a follow up
evaluation two weeks later. The result revealed that there was a
significant difference between the experimental and control
group in terms of aggressive behavior, social skills,
hostility attribution bias.
B. However, in terms of aggressive behavior rating scale, self
concept, self-control, there was no significant difference.
A number of suggestions were made for further study and
educational purpose.
