Using a Family-Centered Positive Behavior Support Program to Reduce Noncompliance Behaviors of
A Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract
The purpose of this action research was to develop and understand the implementing process and effects of the family-centered positive behavior support program designed for reducing noncompliance behaviors of a student with autism spectrum disorder. The researcher and the mother of the participant developed and implemented the program in a collaborative partnership. By conducting functional assessment and family assessment, the researcher and the parent got the information to design a contextually appropriate positive behavior program. The data were collected by observation, interviews and checklists for the researcher to know the changes of the noncompliance behaviors and positive behaviors, and the growth of both the parent and the researcher. The conclusions of this study were as follows:
1. The family-centered positive behavior program could reduce the rate of noncompliance behaviors for the participant with autism spectrum disorder.
2. The family-centered positive behavior program could help the participant with autism spectrum disorder to increase positive behaviors.
3. The development and implementation of the research could comply with the principles of the family-centered positive behavior.
4. The family-centered positive behavior program could contribute to a positive change in the attitude of the parent and the researcher’s personal growth.
According to the findings and conclusions, suggestions were raised for parent, teachers, and future study.
