This study investigates dates of birth, ages of decease, origins of family, places of residence and identities of forty-two significant figures in Natou County in Ching Dynasty. By the investigation, this study recognizes some new information of these celebrities in Nantou County. For example, the major origins of these celebrities’ families are Zhanpu, Nanjing and Pinho County. The condition remains the same for the significant figures in Nantou County today. As to the places of residence, by statistics, most of them lived in Tsaotun, Zhushan, Mingjang and Nantou (in an order of frequency). These towns were located on the west side of the boundary in the mid Chanlong period between the territories of the Han people and the aborigines, and were the several earliest legitimatized areas for reclamation for the Han people. Among these forty-two figures, about half of them had an official rank through imperial examinations. By this fact, the imperial examinations were proved to be the most effective means for ones to promote their social rankings then. Also, by the fact that the first official position, rather than military officers, was assigned as late as in the fifth year of the XianFong period, the educational developments in Nantou County were also confirmed to be rather stagnant than other counties in Taiwan. A lot of social conditions of Nantou County in Ching Dynasty still call for research, which may require more endeavors from historians in the future.
