Two volumes of ＂Shan Hai Jing Illustration＂ by Hu Wenhuan are the earliest blockprinted edition that can be seen today. Its gods, beasts, fish and birds are largely based on ＂Shan Hai Jing＂. There are four volumes in ＂Luochong lu＂ whose publication and printing method is the same as that of ＂Shan Hai Jing Illustrations＂, with pictures on the right and description on the left. The names of some countries in ＂Shan Hai Jing＂ can be found, such as feathered-people country, single-arm country and through-chest country. By examining both newly printed ＂Shan Hai Jing Illustration＂ and ＂Luochong lu＂ together, we can have a glimpse of the imagination of foreign countries in Ming dynasty. Such imagination is not only the shaping of space and foreign people, but also the visualization of special customs and foreign objects. In another word, such imagination of foreign countries is derived from the early tradition of ＂Shan Hai Jing＂ and ＂Bowu zhi＂. The culture possesses a particular sense of tolerating foreign countries, making people accustomed to, expecting or even longing for strangeness and peculiarity. Strange beasts, birds, insects, fish, herbs and trees, people and customs, along with various gods and monsters, create a vivid foreign country, which comprises normality and strangeness as well as indistinguishable illusion and reality, achieving the goal of knowledge construction by encountering various things in remote areas.
