崇高這一概念由古羅馬學者朗吉努斯提出時,原意是指卓越的寫作風格,但因為其概念核心中的超越性因素而引發了眾多思想家對其進行再闡釋的興趣。在這一概念從啟蒙時代到當代的意義衍生歷史中,由于伯克、康德、席勒、利奧塔、齊澤克、詹姆遜等思想家的理論貢獻,崇高的意義被大大拓寬,包容了激情與理性,無限與虛無,極致與極簡等幾乎對立的內涵,傳達著不同思想家對崇高性與現代性、后現代主義、主體性、理性等命題的相關性的思考。

The sublime,the concept raised by Longinus which originally means the elevated writing style,has evolved into a complex discourse concerning transcending efforts.During its migration from the Enlightenment to the Postmodern times,it has accumulated a long list of great thinkers as commentators,among whom there are Edmund Burke,Immanuel Kant,Friedrich Schiller,Jean-Franois Lyotard,Slavojiek,and Fredric Jameson,resulting in extending the connotations of the concept to host even dichotomies such as passion and ration,infinitude and void, extravagance and minimalism,when these thinkers express their different understandings of the relevance of the sublime to the issues of subjectivity,rationality,modernity and postmodernism.
