This dissertation proposes a new media user preference model
to compare three traditional media (TV, TEL, FTF) and
three new networked media (BBS, Email, WWW) with perceived
characteristics and application requirements. The result of
this research, as predicted, is that the three new networked
media are preferred by core users over three traditional
media in many perceived sub-item characteristics,
including time-free, space-free, open access, user control,
personal focus, unaddressed communication and multimedia
etc. In order to establish an idealized media, one must
integrate all of the significant perceived characteristics
together. This research also indicates the networked media
characteristics of system accessibility, richness and
interactivity has more significant influence to meet
resolving equivocality requirement than information
quality. System accessibility, information quality and
interactivity has more significant influence to meet
reducing uncertainty requirement than richness. Media
richness and interactivity has more significant influence to
meet enhancing social relationship requirement than system
accessibility and information quality. These research
results suggest that to meet the requirements of networked
interactive media, we should (1) accelerate the
construction of national information highway, (2) enhance
the usability and stability of the application platform of the
media, (3) increase network security and establish national-
wide open network usage regulations, and (4) generate more
high quality and useful information and put on open
network environment etc.
