Information technology has an increasingly important role in supply chain
management. A body of literature suggests that supply chain management can
provide many benefits, which can be further enhanced by information technology (IT)
that supports various interactions among supply chain members. The reason behind
the superior IT-enabled competitiveness is the ability to improve supply chain
visibility. However, the concept of supply chain visibility still remains unclear and
there is much conceptual ambiguity and little operationalization and measurement.
This has made it difficult to explore the growing interest in potential links between
supply chain visibility and performance and to examine the potential factors that
influence the degree of supply chain visibility. The benefits of supply chain
visibility thus require a more systematic and coherent research framework based on
theoretical perspectives to understand why it can provide competitive advantage as
claimed by previous research. To understand the role of supply chain visibility in
turbulent environment, this dissertation uses the dynamic capabilities view to uncover
the nature of supply chain visibility. Accordingly, the proposed model identifies
four important measurable constructs of supply chain visibility that drives supply
chain reconfigurability and then improves supply chain performance. They are
v
sensing for visibility, learning for visibility, coordinating for visibility, and integrating
for visibility. Also, to enhance our understanding of supply chain visibility, two
important competences are identified as influential factors to enhance supply chain
visibility, i.e., IT competence and relational competence. Implications for better
understanding the nature and the role of supply chain visibility are provided based on
the survey results of the research model.
