Despite the theoretical importance of transfer mechanisms and absorptive capacity as constructs to explain the role of internal capabilities in utilizing external knowledge for organizational competitive advantages, research on how they play in the knowledge transfer process is scarce. This study extends the notions of transfer mechanisms to replication and adaptation and absorptive capacity to exploration and exploitation capabilities, and investigates the moderating effects of transfer mechanisms and the capabilities on the way that knowledge transfer contribute to innovation and financial performance in recipient firms. Using a randomly drawn sample of Taiwanese technology-intensive firms, we find that the effect of motivations and of overseeing effort on knowledge transfer performance varies by the type of replication and adaptation transfer mechanisms and the effect of knowledge attributes and of knowledge transfer mechanisms on knowledge transfer performance varies by the degree of exploration and exploitation capabilities. Our findings advance our understanding of how the fit relationships of the recipients’ organizational capabilities with knowledge attributes and transfer mechanisms and the fit relationships of the recipients’ motivations and overseeing effort with transfer mechanisms influence their ability to benefit from knowledge transfer in innovation and financial performance.
