Providing professional support that addresses the self-care activities of people with diabetes is difficult, but essential to perform for healthcare providers. Integrating technologies into diabetes care services has the potential to overcome the difficulty. However, technology-enabled services may not be adopted widely in clinical practices unless these are designed properly. Many reasons account for the low adoption. For instances, a technology-focused design and absence of service mechanisms will adversely impact service implementation. This work presents the design of technology-enabled diabetes support services by applying a service development approach, and then investigation from healthcare providers’ perspective. The self-care theory is used as a basis for generating service concepts. The proposed support program consists the definition of new service roles, a e-service system and service strategies. Additionally, user perceptions on acceptance (intended to use, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness) are determined by surveying 25 clinical staff nurses. Results of analysis reveal that most subjects had positive attitudes toward the services. Overall, this work was the first attempt to combine the self-care theory and service design. The proposed program can help service providers develop diabetes support services and might be used in clinical practice.
