With increasing awareness of global warming and environmental protection issues, more and more people are inclined to utilize a green mode of transportation during their travels. With this context, non-motorised forms of transport such as cycling have become more environmental sustainable mode choice to travel destination. Developing sustainable transport systems has become an important goal in transportation planning and research in recent decades. Many cities in the world now aim to become low carbon cities and focus on strategies to reduce car use and promote low carbon transportation modes, such as cycling, for commuting and recreational purposes.
To achieve this goal, better understanding cyclists’ preferences for cycling facilities, e.g., bicycle routes, is necessary. This study focuses on commuting and recreational cyclists’ bike path choice behavior, and explores the issue of taste heterogeneity by applying the Mixed logit model (ML) and latent class model (LCM). In addition, the latent variable choice model (LVCM) is adopted to capture the impact of latent variable on cyclists’ route choice behavior in this study.
