Abstract
Intelligence work is a conscientious and complicated profession not the same as what we see in the fantastic movies. The image of 007 movies often over-glorifies people’s action. In the real world, we have to look at spies in a more realistic way. To justify my argument practically and comparably, I choose spy novels written by Ian Fleming and John le Carre as a test case. And from Professor Chen’s suggestion, I find Paul Ricoeur’s Threefold Mimesis very useful for me to explain the authentic and fictive aspects of spy novels. The introductory chapter will disclose my research orientation, methodology and rationale. Chapter One will elaborate the theory of Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutic circle and find out the connections among mimesis 1, mimesis 2 and mimesis 3. Chapters Two and Three will mainly focus on mimesis 2 (emplotment) and try to explain the causes of being a spy and how human action completes the whole plot, by taking le Carre’s novels as examples. Chapter Four is a dialectic of history and fiction where I will elaborate what a historical narrative is and what a fictional narrative is. And then I will explicate on how history and fiction interweave. Chapter Five will distinguish the differences between dreams and realities. In addition, since metaphor has the heuristic function, I shall explicate the relationship between metaphor and hermeneutics. Ricoeur believes we read to increase our self-understanding which can thus enlarge and enrich our human life/soul. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic is a unique theory not only of reading texts, but also of reading human life. With these concepts in mind, the conclusive chapter argues that “legitimacy” is more important than “legality” in the issue of espionage. Through reading, I definitely believe tomorrow will be better if we can treasure the value of humanity and employ cooperative strategy in stead of confrontation to cope with our global affairs.
