In recent years, working holiday is an emerging youth travel. Past studies
indicated that participating in working holiday could acquire some learning
outcomes for tourists, and tourist acquiring learning could affect their daily life
after the trip and future career choices. However, very few studies discuss the
issue related to what tourists learn through working holidays. Therefore, this
study used qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore the learning
outcomes of working holiday tourists (WHTs), and further to develop a WHT
learning scale with good reliability and validity. As for qualitative research, this
study interviewed 21 WHTs and used content analysis to extract interview data.
Four learning categories emerged: (1) personal learning, (2) interpersonal
learning, (3) environmental aspect learning, and (4) job-related learning. These
four categories can be divided into 13 sub-categories. In quantitative research,
this study followed the scale development guidelines to build the WHT learning scale.
Two individual samples were collected and item analysis, exploratory factor analysis,
and confirmatory factor analysis were employed. The results show that the WHT
learning scale included 35 items and 11 factors: (1) organizing and planning capability,
(2) emotional management, (3) self-confidence and independence, (4) physical
capability, (5) social communication, (6) learning from friends, (7) understanding the
local environment, (8) cross-cultural adaptability, (9) geospatial recognition, (10)
employability, and (11) voice for work rights, which have good fit, reliability, and
validity. Finally, the research conclusions, management implication, and future research
suggestions were provided.
