Low-carbon tourism is an emerging issue of tourism industry and academia in recent years. Previous studies have provided us some reasons that tourists participate in low-carbon travel or not, however, these reasons are scattered in literature and not been integrated into the construct of low-carbon travel motivation or low-carbon travel constraint. Meanwhile, previous studies often designed low-carbon package tours through the perspective of operators, few studies have assisted independent tourists on how to save energy and reduce carbon in travel. Therefore, this study is divided into two parts. The purpose of study 1 is to draw on tourism related literature, to develop and test a low-carbon travel motivation and constraint scale. The purpose of study 2 is to draw on tourism related literature, to develop and test a low-carbon travel behavior
scale.
In study 1, we collected item poll primarily by literature review. And then, 772 tourists, 576 tourists with low-carbon travel experience as well as 196 tourists with no low-carbon travel experience, participated in this study. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to verify the validity of the Low-Carbon Travel Motivation and
Constraint Scale. In study 2, we integrated items of low-carbon travel behavior by literature review. Next, 763 tourists, 380 tourists to low-carbon destination as well as
383 tourists to non-low-carbon destination, participated in this study. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to verify the validity of the Low-Carbon Travel
Behavior Scale. Through a rigorous instrument development process, study 1 identified six dimensions of low-carbon travel motivation scale: environmental protection, experience pursuing, escape/social bonding, industry appeals and measures for environmental protection, low-carbon productions, and green transport. The four
dimensions of low-carbon constraint scale are: interpersonal constraint, intrapersonal constrant, structural constraint, and not a travel option. Study 2 identified six dimensions of low-carbon travel behavior scale: low-carbon journey, low-carbon transport, low-carbon accommodation, low-carbon diet, low-carbon consumption, and
low-carbon tendency. Implications for theoretical and practical applications are also discussed.
