There are two main schools in five dynasties, one is mainly based on traditional Chinese painting from the flower and bird painting of Huang Quan in later shu. Until song dynasty, the flower-bird works were prosperous and large numbers of outstanding people came forward. Consequently, this phenomenon created the apex of traditional flower-bird works. After song dynasty, the techniques of flower-bird works are based on magnificent claborate-style painting and freehand-style painting. Until Ming dynasty, the freehand-style painting became flourishing, specially focus on Xu Wei and Chen Chun’s works. In the late Qing dynasty and the early Republican China, the flower-bird works developed rapidly and there were lots of changeable and various painting schools.
The 20 century is the times for change in culture and art. In the area of art, there were three debates related to the direction for development in Chinese painting. In this circumstance, Xue Tao Wang (1903-1982) started his art journey when he was young. The introduction defines and organizes the research methods and materials; in the second chapter, we discuss thoroughly about Xue Tao Tang’s development of art, including life in school, learning from masters or early artists and different painting schools; the third chapter is focus on his concept in flower-bird works and describes learning classification specifically; the fourth chapter is to analyse deeply in flower-bird works’ style, including brushstroke techniques, artistic conception, composition, colors and so on.; the fifth chapter is to review the discussion and comment from educational circles in his art style by stages. Moreover, based on his changed development in flower-bird works and the different styles, this chapter proposed three concepts, “one transition period”, “three transferring periods” and “three different styles”. In the meantime, because of his artistic diversity, I discuss the truth or falsity of his art works; in the sixth chapter, it describes his teaching methods in flower-bird works and influence. Through his followers and the cases of contemporary youth artists, it analyses thoroughly. Furthermore, it discusses the research about him and the conditional factor of his influence.
Based on the research of educational circles, family, friends, and students, I explores and do the research on his various aspects. In his art journey, artistic style in different periods, teaching methods and the truth or falsity of his artworks, I do the arguments and discussions. As a result, it helps us to specify some misunderstandings from educational circles. Besides, it can define in more details about his mature art style. The most significant thing is through this method, it can help us to comprehend his art characteristic in flower-bird works.
