Narrative is an important technique widely used in the media such as movies, dramas, or novels, and it brings emotional appeal and strength of plot to media. Among them, Analepsis is connected to past experiences and memories, and it often appeared in scenes of mystery solving or reminiscence. If the element of Analepsis has been put into the process of product use, it will make users experiencing feelings of past time, such as mind healing, or recall wonderfulness. And increase their preferference to products. The purpose of this study is to construct the Analepsis design model of product use, and provide a reference for product designers to develop new product concept.
The following discussion is divided into three sections. Section 1 discusses the Analeptic concept construct of product use. First, collect the four staged (start, develop, trasition and change, end) analeptic case examples. Then compare the similarities of case examples in each stage by similarity matrix, and use cluster analysis for data grouping. Next, a focus group is formed to discuss the potencial meaning of each group. Then a four-staged conceptual construct of analeptic case examples of product use has been created. It comprised of main concept and sub-concepts.
Section 2 constructs the Analeptic design model. First, explore different analeptic paths of sub-concept combinations of analeptic case examples in the four stages. And then categorize the analeptic paths by focus group discussion. Next, transform “categories of analeptic path”, “analeptic path”, and “combination of analeptic sub-concepts” into “Purpose”, “Essence”, and “Narrative”, and create an analeptic PEN design tool. Finally, an Analeptic design model is proposed by combining “Product Experience Block”, “Design Implement Block”, and “PEN Design Tool Block”.
Section 3 further validates the design model, through designing the testing samples, to validate the usability. The test samples comprised of product-use stories, and product design. And a user evaluation test is conducted, to exam the preference of product-use stories, preference of product, and innovation of product. The result of user evaluation test showed that, subjects have rated high positive evaluations to preference and innovation of test samples. The preference of product-use story and product design has significant correlation. The preference and innovation of product design has significant correlation too. But the correlation was not found between preference of product stories and innovation of product statistically.
