ABSTRACT
Looking at the vast types and developments of traditional Chinese culture and arts, most of them are not only rich in variety, but also engaging in various artistic performances.Such as Chinese opera, puppet show, shadow play, acrobatic performances and dances, they all reflect the real life experience from different dynasty in different humanistic presentation formate. The opera is the most popular art of the Chinese nation, has been inherited for long time, such as Peking opera, Kunqu opera, Catonese opera, Huangmei opera, Sichuan opera, the purpose of this study is to explore the value of Chinese opera culture, especially using in-depth discussion about Peking Opera, hoping to open up a new designing research methods and to create new value from Peking Opera's cultural elements.
From the in-depth research into the art of Peking Opera, this study finds out that each different artistic expression and presentation has it's unique artistic way and different meanings, such as figure features and movement, costumes and clothing, props and the mask like facial make-ups.Take mask like facial make-up for example, its patterned, color, lineage, all has its unique meaning and beauty connotation, and can also contains the meaning implies the role's character type, such as loyalty, villain, good, or evil, as well as its metaphor of the Chinese people's etiquette, loyalty and filial piety. However, due to the change of modern life style, these traditional technique of facial painting has gradually lost its artistic value in Chinese culture.
This paper discusses the lavishness of Beijing Opera from a design perspective, focusing especially on analyzing various facial mask like make-ups patterns, to further understanding the meaning hidden behind.It also established designing rules based on expert opinions, and applies such designing rules to fashion design.The final products based from this research had already been presented in two International conferences, and entered two different international cultural creativity shows.The products are already in actual production and entering the market.The findings are expected to bring new insights to the art of Chinese opera and propose image transformation design as reference for cultural and creative design.
