This thesis aims to do a phased and in─depth research of Wang An─Chi, the important person shining in the history of Chinese opera in Taiwan, through the study of her four dramas which joined the competition in National Military Literature and Arts Awards(NMLAA). In the meantime, it also gives us the opportunity to observe the turning point of NMLAA , the development of this military─supported Chinese Opera Troupe, and its contributions to the Chinese opera in Taiwan. Wang An─Chi has a long and close relationship with NMLAA. She wrote several playwrights for the Army Chinese Opera Team in the 1980s to perform, and kept winning the ―Best Playright of Chinese Opera ‖ in NMLAA constantly. It was highly praised by the judges and society. She started the new style of Chinese opera.
Wang An─Chi's growth in the art of drama starts from being a passionate young audience(1965─1979), to being the four─term judge for NMLAA (1980─1983), and then to being the scriptwriter to participate NMLAA (1985─1990). Every accomplishment she achieved has been made naturally and gently, that makes her fame glorious. It thanks to Wang An─Chi's familiarity and thorough understanding with the history of the troupe competition in the military. She not only explores the mechanism of producing Chinese Opera from a macroscopic point of view, but also develops the art form practically by jumping into the competitions with her profession of scriptwriting. The competition dramas were gradually separated from the propaganda to delicate, exquisite and beautiful pieces of art.
While dedicating herself into the transformation of the dramas competed in NMLAA, Wang An─Chi was also writing dramas for the private troupes. She implanted the framework and concept from the drama created for NMLAA into the ones for private troupes, and it strengthens the artistry of the performance and benefits both sides. In this case, we can say Wang Ani─Chi promoted the communications and built up a mutual relationship between each other with her dramatic works.
Wang An─Chi also made extraordinary achievements in developing characters in the drama. She developed the tragedy heroes played by the awarded actor, Wu Hsing─Kuo , for the Chinese opera troupe in the Army. Wu later became a famous star and director in the theatrical art internationally. Chu Lu─Hao, the winner of the individual gold award in NMLAA, becomes the contemporary Wu Sheng(action actor in Chinese Opera)and have also been very active in film and television area because the inspiration of playing Wang's characters. Princess A─Gai, who is exclusively developed for Kuo Sheng─Fang, won her the individual gold award. She then became the head actress of Taiwan‘s China─Kunming Theatre troupe. the Global Chinese Culture & Arts Award winner, Liu Tung─Kuei, became an important director of the cross─border opera. Lee Hsiao─ping, the national literary─and─arts award winner, became the famous director of traditional theatrical dramas among China and Taiwan. These bright─eyed superstars have worked hard to enhance the influence of Wang An─Chi's characters, and to spread the inspirations of the learning by joining Wang An─Chi's drama. One by one, the artists associate with Wang gently glorify the stage and become the mainstay of the temple of performing arts.
Since 2002 when Wang An─Chi worked as the art director in the Kuo─Kuang Drama Troupe, The selections of her scripts of the Chinese opera have been richer and more diverted than ever. From rewriting the classic Chinese operas to experimental ones, from the feminism to the stories of actors and actresses, from the story behind the painting to the rituals taking place in the theaters, from the cross─border cooperation to introducing the ancient poems to the dramas... She integrates the elements of poetry, prose, novels, stage plays, movies, dance and modern theater into the Chinese opera of Taiwan. It builds up the new aesthetics of contemporary Chinese opera of Taiwan from Kuo─Kuang Drama Troupe. This profoundly cultural performances not only requires the solid knowledge of the traditional Chinese opera but also the pursuit of core values of human nature and emotions. Wang An─Chi looks forward to making these contemporary creations become the main body and direction to strive for.
