In contemporary business practices, the circular economy concepts entail adoption of business models which allow companies to create value in their operations that adhere to environmental sustainability. Many firms understand the significance of environmental sustainability practices as evidenced by recycling processes; however, the practicality of circular economy being a business strategy is yet to be holistically understood.
This study addresses this gap by investigating how firms develop and incorporate circular economy initiatives into their operations and strategy. The study also identifies factors affecting circular economy implementation in firms. Spring Pool Glass is chosen for this study because it has contributed significantly to the development of the development of Taiwan’s glass recycling industry. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and secondary data. The study shows that Spring Pool Glass is practicing the circular economy initiative in its recycling business. It is also found that at the meso-level, the company is going against the norms of the recycling industry for encouraging the practice of the circular economy 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) and raising circular economy awareness among its stakeholder. However, Spring Pool Glass lacks policy to guide it’s circular economy implementation. Also, the concepts of eco-design and green manufacturing practices are not fully implemented by Spring Pool Glass. Sustainable product development practices are highly adopted in the case company, while stakeholder collaboration for sustainable innovation practices are less practiced. The study conclude that to embrace circular economy and create value, it is vital for firms to overcome bottlenecks that could derailed the full realization of the circular economy concept.
