How to stimulate the imagination are the vitally important issues in design courses of higher education. This study attempts to inspire undergraduates’ imagination by combining the concept of metaphorical topic and vehicle with creative thinking in the design course. In addition, this study aimed to investigate the undergraduates’ imaginative and creative performance in poster design after undertaking different level of abstract courses.
The study adopted the pretest-posttest quasi-experiment design which consisted of an abstraction of conception group, a non-abstraction of conception group, and a control group. The subjects were 90 freshmen majored in Visual Communication Design in Northern Taiwan. After instructions, the posters made by students were used to examine the degree to which students improve their efficiency of poster imagination.
The results of the study showed: (1) there was no significant difference in self-perception of imagination among three groups; (2) there was significant difference in Association among groups; (3) there was significant difference in the scores of poster design among groups after instruction and the performance of abstraction of conception group was significant better than non-abstraction of conception group and control group, whereas no significant difference was found between non-abstraction of conception group and control group. Finally, based on the research results, suggestions on teaching theory and practice are provided for reference.
