This doctoral dissertation is a collection of 4 papers by applying efficiency and productivity analysis to Taiwan’s financial sector. It mainly uses two principal methods in the doctrine: Network Data Envelopment Analysis (NDEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) -- Meta-frontier Analysis. In this doctoral dissertation, we start with reviewing and commenting on four papers. Among the three papers from Chapters 2 to 4, we focus on exploring the NDEA methods, including two-stage NDEA, three-stage NDEA, and mixed NDEA with shared resources, while discussing stochastic frontiers in Chapter 5.
In conventional DEA analysis, DMUs are generally treated as a black-box in the sense that internal structures are ignored, and the performance of a DMU is assumed to be a set of chosen inputs and outputs. A significant body of works has been directed at problem settings where the DMU is characterized by a multistage process: financial institutions and many financial service processes take this form. We concentrate on a closed system of the impact of mobile payment on efficiency of Taiwanese banking in Chapter 2, that is, where the outputs from the first stage become the inputs to the second stage. We then focus on more general problem of an open multistage process in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. In Chapter 3, in order to explore the efficiency of Taiwan’s Exchange Traded Funds, we apply a three-stage NDEA model to assess overall and stage-level performance. And in Chapter 4, we propose a new DEA modelling technique to solve a mixed network structure, which consists of serial and parallel processes with shared input resources. The NDEA models allow one to evaluate not only the overall performance of the network, but as well represent how that performance decomposes into measures for the individual components of the network. In Chapter 5, we adopt the two-stage SFA to examine the relation between ownership structure and bank’s efficiency in two long historic communism countries – China and Vietnam with the consideration of some political factors.
