The purpose of the study was to explore the differences and relations among partner’s intimate realtionship and ambivalent sexism of adult partners in terms of their different backgrounds. We also examined the predictability of partner’s intimate relatiooship and attachment styles and ambivalent sexism to matain intimate relationship.
The sample consisted of 507 adults from south part of Taiwan. The study gathered information through questionnaire surveys. The instruments applied were attachment style scale, ambivalent sexism scale. The abtained data were analyed by frequency distribution, percentage, descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, one-way Anova, Pearson’s correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis. The results were as follows:
1. The proportion of secure attachment and dismissing attachment styles in the intimate relationship between partners is the highest.
2. Partners with good health, longer dating time, and stable income have higher levels of secure attachment and dismissing attachment in intimate relationships. They also tend to be more trustworthy of others. The younger the couple and the less stable career, the higher the degree of anxious attachment, the worse the health status and the unmarried couple, the more serious the avoidance of attachment in the intimate relationship, also showing a negative correlation.
3. Married heterosexual men with older partners, stable income, and regular sexual partners have higher degree of benevolent sexism towards women and benevolent and hostile sexism towards men, but hostile sexism towards women is not obvious.
4. There were signigicant correlations at a low to medium level between intimate relationship and ambivalent sexism.
5. Benevolent sexism towards women can effectively predict the degree of secure attachment and dismissing attachment, while benevolent sexism towards men and hostile sexism towards men can effectively predict the degree of anxious attachment and avoidance attachment in intimate relationships.
