This research focuses on the theory and practice of the Feldenkrais Method. Through the dual perspectives of the researcher as a practitioner, this research investigates the process of perceptual transformation from beginner to expert during skill acquisition and provides practical suggestions from enactive cognition. Taking three principles of enactive, extended and embodied, this research suggests that 1. Perception transformation is related to action. Experts can get adequate information by changing the ways of doing; 2. Perception transformation is related to the extension of attention and cognition. Experts can modify the deployment of attention to change the value of information; 3. Perception transformation is related to whole-body experience. Experts can have coupled information from different sensory modalities such as observation with proprioception or tactile with visualization.
This study focuses on the history and future of the Feldenkrais method, uncovering the entanglement between discourses of somatic practices with scientific discoveries. Following Shaun Gallagher's conceptual distinction between body image and body schema, this study re-understands the self image in the Feldenkrais Method and clarifies easily confusing concepts such as awareness, consciousness, attention and intention. Furthermore, Predictive Processing (PP) complements the interactive mechanism between body image and body schema. By focusing on the balance between error minimization and simplifying control, PP further explains the teaching strategies of Awareness Through Movement, such as attention, imagination, constraints, and synergy. Finally, PP understands how Functional Integration is a method of inquiry by viewing action, perception, and cognition as the same mechanism, providing strategies to enhance self-regulation by reciprocal prediction.
