In recent years, digital technology has been rapidly advancing, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been actively embarking on the path of digital transformation. They have been adopting digital tools such as cloud computing, mobile devices, payment systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data to significantly optimize their business models. According to the 2021 Industry Innovation and Transformation Survey, as much as 85.7% of Taiwanese enterprises have already initiated digital transformation, making it a crucial issue for businesses.
This study focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and explores the relationship between digital transformation and business performance. The study employs a mixed methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research methods, to analyze the correlation between digital transformation and business performance in domestic SMEs. The quantitative research findings indicate a positive correlation between the dimensions of digital transformation ("digital intensity," "implementation barriers," and "usage rate") and the dimensions of business performance ("financial performance," "operational performance," and "organizational performance"). The qualitative research findings reveal that the implementation of digital transformation enhances business performance in SMEs, with financial performance and operational performance having the highest impact. Interviewees believe that businesses adopting digital transformation will have a dynamic and promotional business model. Both the quantitative and qualitative studies consistently demonstrate the impact on business performance.

In this study, quantitative analysis was conducted, and all ten hypotheses formulated in the questionnaire received support. After comparing the results with the interviews conducted in the qualitative study, many interviewees expressed the view that when small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) undergo digital transformation, they should consider factors such as consumer behavior, product quantity, profitability, and target customer base. This qualitative research provided more in-depth insights compared to the quantitative study.Based on the research findings, the following recommendations are provided for SMEs considering digital transformation:(1)Assess the level of digitalization within the company before embarking on digital transformation to expedite the adoption of digital tools;(2)Evaluate the possibility of joining digital marketplaces for SMEs.
