This research is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which explains the motivation, propose, literature review, content and methods of the research. The second chapter is Huang Tingjian’s background, life and calligraphy history. In addition to discussing Huang Tingjian’s background and life, it also talks about his family’s influence on Huang’s calligraphy art. As for his calligraphy experience, it includes the process of learning calligraphy in seal script, official script, regular script, running script and wild scribble. Huang’s creations from the age of 14 until the end of his life were all influenced by Tao Hongjing’s “Yihemin”. The third chapter discusses the origins of Huang Tingjian’s wild scribble calligraphy, comparison and analysis with Zhang Xu (about 675-750), the main inherited calligrapher, and Huai Su (725-785), the most important inherited calligrapher. The fourth chapter discusses the creation of Huang Tingjian’s wild scribble. Huang Tingjian was influenced by the ancient seal script, official script, and tadpole script, as well as the inspiration of his father Huang Su, which greatly influenced his wild scribble creation. Huang Tingjian learned the wild scribble calligraphy naturally from his studies, and this is based on Zhang Xu’s wild scribble calligraphy. Huang once saw a boatman plucking a boat and using the drawing lines of bamboo, then transformed them into the lines of wild scribble script to understand the method of using pen brush. Finally, he invented the high holding pen-wrist turning techniques of wild scribble.
The fifth chapter analyzes Huang Tingjian’s “Li Taibai’s Old Travel Poems” written in wild scribble, and explores the entire chapter’s composition, ink method, structure, central axis, movement, white space, lines, glyphs, etc. Chapter 6 is the conclusions. Huang Tingjian’s wild scribble calligraphy influenced the wild scribble calligraphy of Zhu Yunming (1461-1527), Wang duo (1592-1652), Fu Shan (1607-1684) and other calligraphers in the Min Dynasty. It is also worthy of in-depth discussion in the future.
