Study on Word Calligraphy in the Spring and Autumn Period and Qin Dynasty

The formation of the concept of "Qin characters" began with Wang Guowei. He divided the Warring States characters into "Eastern and Western characters". Later research showed that the Qin characters were the inheritance of the Western Zhou characters, so the Qin characters were separated and called "Zhou and Qin characters" ” or “Western script”. Qin characters are important characters and keys that inherit the ancient Chinese character system and create modern Chinese character philology and the Qin-Han philology system. They are a treasure of the art of writing and an important historical material for learning and researching the evolution of calligraphy. They are worth studying. This article mainly conducts a comparative study on the evolution and style of calligraphy fonts in the Spring and Autumn and Qin characters, and presents the status of the Spring and Autumn and Qin characters in Chinese characters. The problem of this study is to explore the characteristics of the writing from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the early Spring and Autumn Period, and the middle and late Spring and Autumn Period, and what are the similarities and differences between the writings in each period. The scope of this study includes the artifacts unearthed from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the late Spring and Autumn Period, including metal bronze, jade, lacquerware, etc., and the inscriptions on them are used to study the context of changes in text form. This research adopts literature research method and glyph comparison method. Three comparison directions are proposed for the Spring, Autumn and Qin characters, that is, those with the same characters and isomers, those with slightly different character shapes, and those with older character shapes are used for comparative analysis. From the comparative analysis, we can see the changes in the inheritance of characters and the use of writing, giving Qin characters a clear status and role in the historical development of Chinese characters. The research results show that the Spring and Autumn and Qin characters were indeed inherited from the Western Zhou Dynasty, and developed into the Qin Xiaozhuan style. This is an important and critical era in the history of calligraphy art!
