To realize the ideals of open education, advanced countries widely adopt self-instructional materials. In Taiwan, the National Open University announced its first attempt of self-instructional material in 1997. This research paper aims to investigate the students reaction toward strategies embedded within this first self-instructional material. The results shows a very positive response toward these strategies, particularly when comparing the self-instructional material with traditional materials. Further analysis reveals that factors such as: place of residence, age, grade, courses taken, and midterm score have significant aptitude-treatment interactions on those designing strategies.
