　　　　　檔案館除了善盡保存檔案之責外，並應提供較佳的檢索工具供使用者 使用。檔案描述編碼格式（EAD）除了能適當地描述檔案的階層架構，對於檔案 內容的描述也較豐富。本文先對檔案描述做個說明，其次舉例說明國史館及中研 院近史所檔案館的紙本式與電子式目錄，然後以國外地區在網站上利用EAD製 作檢索工具的檔案館進行使用並說明。最後將EAD格式應用於從國內這二館中 所調閱的中文檔案，瞭解實際使用情形，並提出結論與建議。
　　　　　The preservation of archives has always been the basic required task for any archival institutions, but the facilitation of finding aids is no less important. Not only can EAD appropriately describe the hierarchical structure of archives, it can also enrich descriptions of them. In this paper, I first introduce the concept of archival description and take as examples the paper and electronic catalogs of Academia Historica and Institute of Modern History in Academia Sinica. Then, I utilize and explicate the web systems of foreign archival institutions which apply EAD as one of their finding aids. Then, I attempt to apply EAD to those Chinese archives sampled from our two local archival institutions. Finally, I try to draw a certain conclusions and suggestions.
