脂質是長時間運動主要的能量來源,同時也構成體內生物膜保護細胞維持正常功能與合成膽固醇及固醇類荷爾蒙等的重要原料。然而運動時,粒線體內過多的氧氣消耗、黃嘌呤氧化酶作用、過氧體內的酵素活動、兒茶酚胺的刺激以及白血球的活動等,都將引起大量的氧化反應物,這包括自由基與非自由基類,致使增加體內氧化壓力,造成脂質氧化傷害,影響生物體基本正常功能運行及發發,最終可能加速老化以與疾病產生。但研究証明適度的運動,可以增加體內抗氧化物與抗氧化酶活性,減少脂質過氧化物。相關研究也進一步得到,運動可增加高密度脂蛋白膽固醇與減少低密度脂蛋白膽固醇及三酸甘油脂的濃度,同時也降低低密度脂蛋白被氧化程度,避免冠心疾病與動脈硬化情形發生。
