The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the levels of serum electrolyte on male and female mallards at moult. Forty mallards (25 male, 15 female) were used in this experiment and blood samples were collected from May to October, 1998. The results showed that the range of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, chloride and potassium concentrations in serum were 7.59-14.54 mg/dL, 2.5-8.7 mg/dL, 2.81-3.80 mg/dL, 147.51-155.18 mmol/L, 110.15-111.87 mmol/L and 2.50-6.47 mmol/L, respectively. The calcium and phosphorous concentrations changed significantly by month (P<0.05). At moult period from May to July, the serum concentration of calcium and phosphorous, magnesium, and potassium of male mallards were greater than those of female mallards (P<0.05).
